Cristian Crisbasan is an art photographer from Romania Bucharest
where he studied fine arts at the arts gymnasium & Fine
Arts College from Bucharest. Apart from that study he studied
at the BBC television school also in Bucharest.
He started with photography as a hobby in 1985 and at that
time he never had the serious intention of becoming a professional
photographer. After a short career in journalism he worked
as a stylist for Playboy Romania (1999 / 2001). In 2000 /
2001 he worked as a stylist, head of style and editorial director
for Madame Figaro Romania.
After seeing these experiences he had the revelation that
the true image of the beauty of a woman - the natural, vivid,
honest, unspoiled beauty – it is not at all lying in
the fashion photography or PLAYBOY like nude
images.
“Commercial photography is never
about the woman that is in front of you, but about a preconceived
image build-up by art- directors, publishers, chief-editors,
stylists and clients’ expectations, visions and needs.
In other words, it is a cliché about woman meant to
force readership to buy more and more magazines and products...
So, I decided to go free to present the woman as I see and
feel her.”
He started doing serious photography in 2001 and he quickly
started using digital cameras. The use of digital cameras
meant more freedom for Cristian to express his vision. Creating
art is fro him only possible as long as the artist had a vision,
a mission, concepts and strong messages.
When we asked him to choose between erotic, fashion &
glamour photography he answered the following:
“I always wondered why my photography
is considered erotic? Well, I can understand that a naked
female body can raise certain feelings and thoughts, but this
is not what I am looking for. This is a very subjective matter
anyway. What is erotic to some, is non- erotic to many others
and vice-versa.
My
vision is build up on 2 major ideas: the woman is the most
rich, vivid, powerful and fascinating being on Earth; the
most complete, honest, natural and true portrait of a woman
is her whole nude body, with all the signs of her womanhood,
with her eyes looking straight to us. Because is the only
way to tell an honest story about the woman in front of you.
Anything else is using the woman as an element (more or less
important) for a preconceived vision. It is another way, it
is OK, but it is not my way. So, if you see erotic, glamour
or fashion in my images it is because these women wanted to
show themselves like that. Not because I forced them to POSE
in a certain way. I never ask them TO POSE. But if they want
to pose, I let them, because it is the role they want to play.
What
do I like most? Bold, vivid, natural women, smart, clever,
without prejudices, ready to pose nude in the most natural
way. In Romania, there many beautiful women and many different
types: blondes, brunettes, red-haired, all types of skin,
eyes and all possible combinations between these. I am trying
to document the life
of this collective beauty...”
Apart
from art photography he is the proud publisher of two short
story books: “Minor Delicts or Our Daily Kitsch”
(2004) and “Toxic People” (2005). He also has
a passion for graphic design and is the art director of a
magazine about 4 by 4 off road vehicles. He is also the author
of the compact photography book "Digital Sessions"
(DAAB - Koln, 2005).
